art and computer science

A collaboration with Sussex University cognitive scientists Andrew Philippedes and Michael O’ Shea. The artist selected Chinese Whisper drawings and asked people if they could match the 1st and the 15th images. Philipedes then designed a computer algorithm to compare the performance of an artificial eye with the human eye. This research was funded by Arts Council England.

The Graphs below show 2 pairs of drawings analysed pixel by pixel for likeness. The pair on the left are 15th and 1st from the same sequences, on the left a pair from different sequences.
